Alchemy: A Journey to Transmutation by Delmy Alvarenga

ON-GOING PROJECT

A Journey To Transmutation

Fascinated with symbolism, I landed on Dr. Jung’s work, discovering both, his analytical papers on Archetypes, his Memoirs to his symbolic work on The Red Book.

THE DREAM CHASER

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by symbolism. To maintain my connection with my inner self, I used to write about the imagery in my dreams.

At the height of this journey, I discovered Carl Jung’s work on archetypes. His analytical work opened the door for me to delve deeper into his mystical writings, leading me to the «Red Book», and his memoir, «Memories, Dreams, Reflections*.

INSPIRATION

I wanted to learn more about this fascinating process of humanity . To learn more and illustrate myself on the zeigeist of the Medieval period, I purchased Taschen’s Alchemy & Mysticism, The Book of Symbols, Codices Illustres, and Harmonia Macrocosmica.

On March 2021, I met a psychologist who introduced me to Marie Von Franz’s Alchemy: An Introduction to the Symbolism and Psychology, deepening my understanding on this mysterious and naive pseudo-science.

THE CREATOR AWAKENS

For five years, concepts, drawings, imagery, and mysticism have lingered in the back of my mind, constantly growing, mutating, evolving, and dissolving…

Finally, inspiration struck, guiding me to interpret, and create, integrating my own experience with my surroundings.
My hope is to transmuate these drive into gold —art pieces intertwined with meaning.

"Separatio". Handmade artwork depicting a dried leaf falling from Heaven into a Dark Void.

Separatio

The act of separation is a metaphor for the inner work of self-discovery and personal growth. It calls for introspection, encouraging individuals to examine their inner lives and discern their true essence from the distractions and illusions of everyday existence.

By engaging in this process, one can identify and remove negative traits, harmful patterns, and external influences that cloud their true nature.

Separatio is a crucial stage in the transformative process of turning base materials into the Philosopher’s Stone,
a symbol of ultimate wisdom and enlightenment.

Often represented by the splitting of substances, this stage holds profound symbolic meaning, both in the alchemical tradition and in broader philosophical and psychological contexts.

"Conjunctio". Handmade artwork depicting a dried leaf on to of a geometrical design.

Conjunctio

The alchemical union encapsulates the merging of opposites, a sacred harmony sought by alchemists. It signifies the integration of masculine and feminine, sun and moon, or any contrasting elements. This union goes beyond synthesis; it’s a mystical marriage, representing the reconciliation of dualities within oneself.

In alchemical texts and imagery, Conjunctio often appears as a sacred wedding or the union of two figures, portraying the alchemical wedding. It embodies the transformative power of unity, where conflicting forces cease opposition and instead collaborate in a harmonious dance, giving birth to a transcendent third entity—an alchemical child, the symbol of a new, evolved state of being.

Conjunctio teaches that true transformation arises from embracing and integrating opposing forces within, fostering inner wholeness and transcending duality. It’s a profound allegory for personal growth, the merging of conscious and unconscious, leading to spiritual enlightenment and completeness.

"Fire". Handmade artwork depicting a dried leaf on top of an illustration of flames and an ominous Sun.

Fire

In alchemy, fire embodies an elemental force beyond its physical manifestation. It symbolizes purification, transformation, and the catalyst for change. As a symbol of spiritual awakening, it represents both destruction and creation—a paradoxical force vital for transmuting matter and consciousness.

Fire symbolizes passion, desire, and the fervor necessary for alchemical endeavors. Its transformative power lies not just in physical transmutation but in the spiritual and psychological evolution it signifies.

In the intricate tapestry of alchemical symbolism, fire dances as a reminder of the dual nature of change—it destroys the old to forge the new, embodying the perpetual cycle of creation and destruction fundamental to the alchemist’s journey toward self-realization.
